Thanks for the links. QNX is the best and most expensive real-time OS. www.qnx.org.
There is a free version available somewhere. I run its windows manager and it was smooth and really really fast

I'm looking at either the free RTLinux or RTAI - there's a good comparison at http://rtportal.upv.es/comparative/rtl_vs_rtai.html. I'm installing it on my desktop machine to play around with driving servos and reading the output from my transmitter buddy box signal. I figure it's fairly easy to do that (eg. http://www.tldp.org/LDP/LG/issue96/pramode.html) and I'll probably learn useful lessons that way.

No, I've never used QNX before. What is it like?

A really amazing and complete project! You are going to learn a lot of interesing stuff.
When you talk about RTLinux you mean the free version, do you? Does it run on the above Atmel?
Have you worked with QNX?
